Two-vehicle mishap leaves two injured

TOPPENISH – A Sunnyside woman and a man from Prosser were hospitalized yesterday afternoon as the result of a two-vehicle accident that occurred about one mile east of Toppenish.

Washington State Patrol officials report that both Jose R. Garcia of Prosser and Felipe L. Flores of Sunnyside were driving vehicles eastbound on SR-22 at about 5:30 p.m. yesterday (Sunday).

WSP troopers say Flores, 85, was driving a 1999 Honda Civic sedan at a slow rate of speed. A 1987 Toyota pick-up, with the 55-year-old Garcia behind the wheel, struck the Honda Civic. WSP officials did not indicate if Garcia was attempting to pass the sedan.

The collision caused the Honda sedan to veer off the roadway and it struck a tree. Flores, the driver, escaped unharmed, but a passenger in the car – 74-year-old Ramona Vialon-Lopez of Sunnyside – did sustain injuries. She was transported by ambulance to the hospital in Toppenish.

The driver of the Toyota pick-up, Garcia, also suffered injuries. The State Patrol reports he was taken to the Prosser hospital by a private party.

Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene. WSP officials noted an investigation is underway to determine if charges will be filed.
