Shirley Nitelle Slupsky, 82, of Sunnyside passed away on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014.
She was born Sept. 30, 1931 in Grand Forks, N.D. to Ray and Nitelle Gilbert.
Shirley graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1953 and started teaching at her alma mater, Central High School, in Grand Forks.
On June 4, 1957 she married Rudy Slupsky of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The family moved to Sunnyside in 1960, where she began teaching Spanish and Latin at multiple schools in the Sunnyside School District. She retired from Sunnyside High School in 1987.
Shirley was very active with her family, community and church.
She played the flute, taught music lessons, participated in musical comedy and symphony for many years.
She loved skiing, golfing, sewing, knitting and many other creative endeavors. In her later years she really enjoyed her Friday morning breakfast club, Nouvella trips, ADK activities, golfing with friends and monthly birthday dinners with the Sunnyside gang.
She is survived by two sons, Don Slupsky of Hermiston, Ore. and Steve Slupsky of Parker, Ariz.; her sister, Donna Holm of Lake Stevens; her brother, Ray Gilbert of Sequim; her daughter-in-law, Becky Graff Slupsky of Hermiston; two grandchildren, Kyle Slupsky of Hermiston and Shannon (Steve) Slupsky Dahl of Vancouver, along with their son, her great-grandson, Brayden; her niece, Karen (Joe) Veloz, and their daughter, Katie of Grandview; her nephew, David (Tamara) Holm, and their sons, Aiden and Dawson, of Granite Falls; numerous other loving relatives; and friends.
Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 51 years, Rudy Slupsky in 2008.
Viewing will be held Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014, from 2 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, morning, Aug. 14, 2014, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., with family viewing from 9:30 to 10 a.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside, with burial to follow at 10 a.m. at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside, followed by a memorial service at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Sunnyside.
