Mabton girls open season with pair of jamboree victories

MABTON – The Lady Vikings were 2-0 during the Viking Jamboree held last Friday at Mabton High School, defeating Kiona-Benton and Tri-Cities Prep in 10-minute games.

Mabton defeated the Kiona-Benton Bears, 27-8, in their opening game. Cassidy McCallum and Alyssa Nash were the top scorers for the Lady Vikings, each bucketing 8 points. McCallum dropped in two three-pointers in two tries.

The Lady Vikes beat the Tri-Cities Prep Jaguars, 21-9, to close out the jamboree. Mia Herrera led Mabton with 7 points in the second game.

Desanay Guerrero was the rebound leader for the Lady Vikings, pulling down five loose balls in the first game and four in the second game.

Mabton Coach Chris McCallum said his team played with great focus.

“The girls did their assignments and played great team basketball,” McCallum said. “We need to do a better job of not fouling. We’re an aggressive team but need to be smart at the same time.”

He said the goal is to improve every week, learning from mistakes and fixing them for the next game.

“I’m very excited for the upcoming season,” he said.
