Marijuana licensing moratorium extended

YAKIMA – Although the Yakima County Commission on Jan. 21, 2014 voted to prohibit marijuana businesses from operating in unincorporated areas of the county, a moratorium is in place until the Yakima County codes are modified.

A six-month moratorium was approved last September and will soon expire. As a result, Yakima County commissioners agreed to a public hearing set for Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 10:30 a.m. for the purpose of extending the moratorium on the retail sales, production and processing of recreational marijuana.

The extension of the moratorium will allow county staff the time to complete the planning process for the amendment to codes that will prohibit recreational marijuana businesses from being established in unincorporated areas of Yakima County.

The Yakima County commissioners approved the public hearing date and time by a 2-0 vote.
