Sunnyside High School senior Brianna Esqueda and SHS Coach Tina Peabody are all smiles at the WIAA 1A/2A/3A State Bowling Tournament at Narrows Plaza Bowl near Tacoma last Friday. Esqueda tallied a six-game block total of 901 on games of 143-170-171-166-120-131, good for 44th place honors. Esqueda initially missed out on securing one of the four individual berths to State that were up for grabs at the Jan. 29 District tournament in the Tri-Cities. But when one of the four State qualifiers was later deemed ineligible to compete at State, the two girls who tied for fifth at District – Esqueda and a kegler from Connell – competed in a one-game roll-off. Esqueda prevailed in that match-up, earning herself a spot at the State tourney. This year’s 1A/2A/3A State champion proved to be Shannon Bailey of Wilson High School. She bested the 63-girl field with a six-game series of 1274 on efforts of 218-179-220-190-220-247.
