Lodging tax funding OK’d

The Sunnyside City Council Monday approved more than $10,500 in appropriations from the lodging tax fund.

Best Western Grapevine Inn plans to purchase training materials to develop tourism. The cost for the materials is $540. The city council approved the funding by a 7-0 vote.

The council also approved $10,000 for the purpose of marketing the Northwest Nitro Nationals Hill Climb event, which is held near Sunnyside.

John Nyboer, a member of the hill climb’s board, said the organization has placed a greater emphasis on advertising the event as a Sunnyside event. He said the board had to convince promoters that advertising it as a Yakima event was an affront to the community of Sunnyside.

He said motorcycle enthusiasts come from all over the country to participate in the event.

After his presentation, the city council by a 7-0 vote approved the $10,000 recommended by the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee for use in marketing the Northwest Nitro Nationals Hill Climb event.
