BICKLETON – Out of commission for a full week – due to the cancellation of last weekend’s games because of icy road conditions – it’s no surprise the Bickleton High School girls basketball team had to shake off a little rust last night.
But after scoring just four points in the opening quarter against the visiting Klickitat Vandals, Bickleton caught fire behind the tandem of Lindsay Brown and Jayce Alexander.
A junior, Brown led the way for the Lady Pirates. She knocked down a game-high 12 points Tuesday evening.
Alexander, only an eighth grader, chipped in 9 points, which helped Bickleton send the Vandals packing, 43-31.
The win over Klickitat gives the Lady Pirates a season sweep of the Vandals in Greater Columbia 1B League play.
Bickleton Coach Emily Barnhart said her club controlled the pace of Tuesday’s game, after getting outscored by a 7-4 margin in the opening period.
The Lady Pirates took back the lead by halftime, going into the break up by a 21-19 score. Bickleton stretched its advantage to 30-23 heading into the final quarter, then salted the game away with a 13-8 run in the final eight minutes of play.
Besides combining for 21 points, Brown and Alexander each snared 11 rebounds for the winners. Brown also dished a team-best four assists, swatted away three of Klickitat’s shots and came through with six steals on the defensive end of the court.
Freshman Katrina Cardenas, said Barnhart, “...had a stellar defensive game, as well, with six steals, herself.”
Bickleton, too, received an offensive lift from Lacy Cannon. The sophomore tallied 11 points.
The Lady Pirates (2-7, 5-13) are scheduled to close out league play tonight (Wednesday) at Trout Lake.
