GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL
TROUT LAKE – Bickleton’s girls gave the 1B playoff-bound Trout Lake Mustangs a scare last night.
“It was a great game for our girls to finish off their season with,” Bickleton Coach Emily Barnhart said of the closer than the 59-45 score indicated.
“We played well and controlled throughout the whole game,” she said, except Barnhart noted, midway through the final quarter.
“We had just a slight waver that let the Mustangs get up by about seven, and we just couldn’t pull ourselves back up as our scoring went a little dead,” she explained.
The Lady Pirate basketball team grabbed a 17-14 lead in the opening period. The two clubs then battled to a 28-all halftime draw.
Refusing to fold, Bickleton continued going tit-for-tat with Trout Lake, ending the third quarter squared at 40-40.
The last-quarter swoon by Bickleton, in which the Mustangs pieced together a 19-5 run, allowed Trout Lake to pull out the 59-45 victory.
Bickleton, which concluded the 2013-14 campaign with a league record of 2-8 and a 5-14 mark overall, for the second straight game got an outstanding performance from eighth grader Jayce Alexander. She led all scorers in the game with 13 points.
The Lady Pirates also received a great all-around effort from junior Lindsay Brown. She notched a double-double by tossing in 11 points and collecting 10 rebounds. Brown, too, blocked five shots and tallied four steals.
Sydnie Whitmore, one of only two seniors on Bickleton’s roster, closed out her prep hoop career with a team-high six assists Wednesday evening.
Pacing Trout Lake last night was the quartet of Crystal Mendoza, McKinzie Wurtz, Caitlin Scott and Beyyine Ozkan with 12, 11, 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Mustangs, the No. 4 seed out of the Greater Columbia 1B League, open the District tournament in Goldendale this Friday against the unbeaten and state’s No. 2 ranked Sunnyside Christian Lady Knights.
