MATTAWA – Jessica Cardenas earned championship honors in the 170-lb. weight class to spark the Sunnyside girls during Regional wrestling competition last Saturday.
Cardenas secured first-place honors when she pinned Kittitas’ Jacqlyn Hunter in the championship match of her weight class.
Aylin Bautista advanced to the title match for Sunnyside in the 155-lb. weight class, where she settled for runner-up honors after getting pinned in the finale by Warden’s Aneissa Gonzales.
Jasmine Stark (235 lbs.) also earned second-place honors for the Lady Grizzlies after she was pinned in the championship match by Warden’s Andrea Contreras.
In that same weight class, Cassidy Ochoa punched her ticket to State for Sunnyside as the third-place finisher. She pinned Warden’s Alexandra Prado in the third/fourth place match.
Belen Torres (190 lbs.) also brought home a third-place medal for Sunnysidewith a pin in the third/fourth place match over Othello’s Isabella Chavez.
The other Lady Grizzly advancing to the State tourney in Tacoma this coming Friday and Saturday is Daisy Ochoa (118 lbs.), who earned third-place honors with a pin in the third/fourth place match over Warden’s Tania Dominguez.
Jeniya Guillen (112 lbs.) and Amanda Bazan (145 lbs.) finished in fifth place in their respective weight classes and will travel with the Lady Grizzlies as alternates.
Rubi Ochoa (137 lbs.) of Sunnyside won’t travel to Tacoma, but the junior did place at Regionals by finishing sixth in her weight class.
Coach Terry Shines is encouraged by the number of wrestlers Sunnyside is taking to this year’s girls State tourney. In addition, he said all six of the qualifiers will be back next year for Sunnyside.
That includes Bautista and Ochoa, who are only freshmen. Torres is a junior, but Shines notes this is her first year wrestling at SHS.
Now it’s a matter of taking that youth movement and bringing home hardware from Tacoma.
“I’m impressed with our depth, we’re excited to be going there,” he said.
