Greyhound forfeits costly against West Valley

GRANDVIEW – Forfeits killed the Greyhound grapplers last night as they absorbed a 47-33 loss to visiting West Valley.

“Giving up 30 points in forfeits puts us in a hole that is very difficult to overcome,” said Grandview Coach Jeff Sevigny.

“On the mat we have been wrestling hard and showing improvement, but we are missing too many pieces to be as competitive as we should be.”

Getting pins for Grandview were Diego Castaneda (138 lbs.), Joesiah Saunders (145 lbs.) and Brandon Marquez (160 lbs.). Marquez was making his first appearance of the season after suffering an injury during football season.

At 106 lbs., Marizza Birrueta showed her grit after being thrown to her back in the first period and trailing 5-0 early in the match. Birrueta clawed her way back to pull out a 9-8 win Zach Trujillo.

The Rams forfeited only two matches, to Lady Greyhounds Viannei Perez and Desiree Zavala. The Greyhounds couldn’t field wrestlers in five matches due to injuries and ineligibility.

The Greyhounds (1-2) are scheduled to host Ephrata tonight, Wednesday.
