RICHLAND – It wasn’t looking very positive for the Sunnyside Christian Knights at Liberty Christian this past Saturday.
The Patriots took an early nine-point lead, but the Knights eked out a 60-57 win when the dust settled.
Liberty Christian had a 35-23 lead at halftime.
Brian Bosma, coach for the Knights, said, “We gave up seven offensive rebounds in the first quarter…that stunk. We gave up six 3-pointers in the second quarter…that stunk.”
He said Sunnyside Christian was playing “…a lousy defensive game…we had too many fouls.”
Bosma said Liberty Christian had 33 opportunities at the charity stripe.
The Knights, however, didn’t give up and began chipping away at the lead in the third stanza, outscoring the Patriots 17-15.
Sunnyside Christian placed more defensive pressure on Liberty Christian in the final quarter, limiting the Patriots to just seven points to pull out the 60-57 win.
A 3-point shot from Sunnyside Christian’s Dylan Cervantes with 31 seconds on the clock gave the Knights the only lead of the game, as well as the victory.
“We did it with a lot of 2-pointers…we kept grinding away,” said Bosma.
He said the Knights were also proficient on the boards, snatching the ball from the glass each time Liberty Christian missed a shot.
“Drew (Scheenstra) cleaned up the boards, getting nine offensive boards,” Bosma said, noting Scheenstra had a double-double with 14 rebounds and 19 points for the Knights.
Teammate Brant Bosma was the leading scorer with 23 points, 19 of which came in the second half.
“He led the (second half) rally,” said Coach Bosma.
Leading the Patriots with 26 points was Isaiah Ojeda. He dropped the ball in the basket five times from beyond the 3-point arc in the opening half of the game and was 9-for-12 from the charity stripe.
Sunnyside Christian will this coming Friday travel to Yakama Tribal and on Saturday will host Klickitat.
