RICHLAND – Sunnyside Christian went to Richland this past Saturday hoping for a challenge, but Liberty Christian didn’t provide the match-up the Lady Knights wanted.
“It wasn’t a tough game,” said Sunnyside Christian Coach Al Smeenk. “They got a new coach, they are still learning each others’ philosophy.”
The unbeaten Lady Knights brought home a 61-21 victory, led by an excellent performance from Stormee Van Belle, who earned a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Also in double-digit scoring was Brittany Broersma, who bucketed 15 points for Sunnyside Christian in the win.
Lady Knight Katelyn Banks scored eight points despite struggling with a sore elbow and not taking as many shots as normal.
“Our opponents played zone the entire night,” said Smeenk. “We haven’t faced much of that, but handled it well.”
The Lady Knights shot better than 50 percent from the field.
“We played well,” said Smeenk.
Sunnyside Christian (1-0, 8-0) returns to league play this Friday night with a visit to Yakama Tribal. On Saturday the Lady Knights will host league opponent Klickitat.
