Mabton suffers dual losses at double dual

GOLDENDALE – The Mabton wrestling team traveled to Goldendale last night for a double-dual against the Timberwolves and Granger.

The Vikings suffered a 56-18 loss to Goldendale and a 66-12 loss to the Spartans.

“We continue to have a lot to work on,” said Mabton Coach John Kilian, stating it is frustrating to watch the Vikings fail to execute moves that have been practiced when in a competitive setting.

“We’re giving up on holds, giving points away when we don’t need to,” said Kilian.

He said there needs to be an emphasis on not giving up mentally.

“The positive is that not every loss was a pin,” Kilian said.

Two Vikings earned a victory each last night. Emiliano Rodriguez pinned Nick Dix of Goldendale in 2:46 in the 132-lb. weight class.

“We expected that since Emiliano pinned him last Saturday in Grandview,” said Kilian.

Isaac Velasquez of Mabton also got a pin. He subdued Frankie Alegria of the Spartans in 2:21.

The Vikings scored an additional 12 points against the Timberwolves with a couple of forfeits, and six points were given to Mabton due to a forfeit by Granger.

Mabton’s Gabriel Mireles battled Granger’s Chuco Cisneros for 3:21 before landing on his back in the 113-lb. weight class.

Rodriguez lost the bout against Spartan Victor Almaguer by pin in 1:06.

Rudy Ramirez (170 lbs.) was pinned by Goldendale’s Cameron Read in 3:23 and by Granger’s David Cantu in 1:07.

Mabton’s Salvador Urbina lost a major decision (13-5) to Timberwolf Zane Cully before submitting to the pin by Granger’s David Alegria in 1:10 in the 220-lb. matches.

Reggie Sargeant of Goldendale won a major decision (12-0) over Velasquez to finish the matches.

Mabton next Tuesday, Jan. 21, will host Cle Elum, Ki-Be and Zillah.
