Train track crossing arm malfunction stops traffic

Traffic was held up at the Yakima Valley Highway and Waneta Road intersection twice Wednesday afternoon when the railroad crossing arms malfunctioned.

Railway company technicians attempted to repair the crossing arms twice before deciding to take the safety arms off-line after checking the local train schedule, according to Sunnyside police.

The incident was first reported at noon, when the crossing arms came down without a train in sight. Officers provided traffic control until the arms were raised.

Repairs are expected to be completed by Thursday (today).

Sunnyside officers, also yesterday, investigated a theft of four iPads from the 1800 block of East Edison Avenue. The stolen property was later recovered and a male juvenile was detained for questioning regarding the theft. No further information was available.

Police also detained a male juvenile in the 2600 block of East Lincoln Avenue late Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of shoplifting.

In other activity police investigated a report of an assault, two automatic alarms, a report of an abandoned vehicle, one report of vandalism, two reports of suspicious circumstances and one vehicle prowl.

Officers, too, provided four agency assists, served four arrest warrants, made two citizen assists, one welfare check and handled two informational calls.
