Sunnyside’s Daisy Chavez (124 lbs.) gets the upper hand early on the way to a pin in just 22 seconds over Aisling McConn of Kiona-Benton. Chavez later made it a perfect 2-for-2 evening with a pin against Othello.

Hosting 1A Kiona-Benton and 2A Othello last night, Thursday, the 3A Sunnyside Lady Grizzly wrestling team earned a split.

The Lady Grizzlies trailed Ki-Be 30-12 before winning the final four matches to secure a 36-30 victory.

Sunnyside’s decisive roll started when Amanda Bazan (155 lbs.) earned a pin in 1:03 over the Bears’ Maria Enriquez.

Ki-Be then had to forfeit the next two matches, which knotted the score at 30-30. That led to the finale at 235 lbs., where Sunnyside’s Cassidy Ochoa recorded a pin to hand the Lady Grizzlies a team win.

It was tougher sledding for Sunnyside against Othello, as the Huskies prevailed 45-21.

Jessica Cardenas (170 lbs.), Daisy Chavez (124 lbs.) and Ochoa all recorded pins for the Lady Grizzlies.

Sunnyside’s other head-to-head victory came in the 112-lb. weight class, where Kayla Gonzalez earned a 4-3 victory over Othello’s Tori Zambrano.

The Lady Grizzly JV wrestling squad was also in action for the home double-dual match last night. The JV team fell 57-12 to Othello and were just nipped by Kiona-Benton, 30-27.

The Sunnyside girls travel tomorrow, Saturday, to compete at a tourney in Othello.
