The Sunnyside Christian boys basketball team this past Friday and Saturday split its games against Yakama Tribal and Klickitat.
On Friday, it was Yakama Tribal that won 48-44. Saturday, the Knights recovered for a 65-29 win over the Vandals.
Against the Eagles Sunnyside Christian was kept to just seven points in the opening period. Yakama Tribal scored 10 points.
The teams were evenly matched, scoring 11 points apiece in the second stanza, but the Eagles maintained a 21-18 lead at halftime.
Sunnyside Christian started the third quarter slow with just nine points. The Eagles added 15 points to their score.
The Knights tried to overcome the deficit, outscoring Yakama Tribal 17-12 in the final quarter. But, the effort wasn’t enough to pull out a win.
Leading Sunnyside Christian on the scoreboard was Drew Scheenstra with 13 points. Teammate Joel Martin contributed another 11 points to the final tally.
For Yakama Tribal it was Joseph Sanchey who led the team with 14 points.
Saturday’s game was different in that the Knights opened the game with a eight-point lead (15-8).
Sunnyside Christian continued to hold back the Vandals, ending the opening half with a 26-17 lead.
In the third and fourth quarters, Sunnyside Christian was able to keep Klickitat from scoring in double digits. The Vandals scored nine and three points in the third and fourth quarters, respectively. The Knights, on the other hand, tallied 15 and 24 points in the final two quarters for a 65-29 victory.
Sunnyside Christian’s leading scorer was Scheenstra with 18 points. Martin added another 13 points.
For Klickitat, it was Tim Lambert who score 15 of his team’s 29 points.
Sunnyside Christian (2-1, 7-3) will tomorrow (Tuesday) travel to Bickleton to take on the Pirates.
