GIRLS PREP WRESTLING
OTHELLO – The Sunnyside Lady Grizzly wrestling team produced a solid showing last Saturday by placing fifth at the 29-school Othello invitational.
Sunnyside had seven medalists at the tourney, claiming a total of 88 team points. Mt. Baker garnered the team scoring title with 193 points.
Kayla Gonzalez (106 lbs.) of Sunnyside garnered second-place honors Saturday when she lost in the championship match to Richland’s Tamicka Pierce via a second-round pin.
Also finishing runner-up in her weight class was Sunnyside’s Jessica Cardenas (170 lbs.), who lost the championship match against Franklin Pierce’s Kacie Morehouse in overtime by a 2-1 score.
Daisy Chavez brought home a third-place medal for Sunnyside in the 124-lb. weight class when she pinned White River’s Michelle Redford in the second round of the third/fifth place match.
Also earning third place honors was Amanda Bazan (155 lbs.) of Sunnyside with a pin in the second round of the third/fifth place finale over Callie Mendez of Connell.
Cassidy Ochoa (235 lbs.) also claimed third place honors for Sunnyside, while teammates Aylin Bautista (155 lbs,), Jasmine Starke (235 lbs.) and Jeniya Guillen (118 lbs.) all brought home fifth-place medals.
“The girls had a good tourney,” said Sunnyside Assistant Coach Rick Sambrano. “I was pleased with the whole team. They did everything the coaches asked and stayed on task.”
The home finale and senior night for the Sunnyside girls is this coming Thursday against Eastmont.
