Sunnyside Christian prevails at Bickleton

BICKLETON – Put the defending State tournament runners-up on a court against a rebuilding team comprised of mostly eighth graders and freshmen, well, there’s not much chance for a competitive game.

Such was the case last night.

Sunnyside Christian, second to Colton last year at the 1B State tourney and with just about all of its players back this season, cruised past the Bickleton Lady Pirates Tuesday evening, 70-18.

SCHS Coach Al Smeenk subbed in his reserves early and often in an attempt to keep the game close. It didn’t really work, as the Lady Knights bench players pulled away from Bickleton’s varsity time and again.

Stat-wise, Stormee Van Belle turned in the top performance. The Sunnyside Christian senior shoved 21 points through the net. She also had a game-high 13 rebounds.

SCHS teammate Kristen Broersma added a 7-point, 7-rebound effort.

Besides Van Belle, also scoring in double figures for the Lady Knights were Katelyn Banks and Brittany Broersma with 15 and 12 points, respectively. Rounding out the scoring for the winners were Annie Brouwer and Melissa Dalrymple with 5 points apiece, Annie den Hoed with 3 points and Micki Williams with 2.

Eighth grader Kira Har-vey popped in a third of Bickleton’s point total, tallying a team-high 6 points for the host Lady Pirates.

Junior Lindsay Brown turned in a strong defensive effort for Bickleton, swatting away seven shots by Sunnyside Christian inside the paint.

Eighth grader Jayce Alexander also had some nice rebounding numbers for Bickleton, scraping six loose balls off the glass.

Bickleton (0-3, 3-9) returns to Greater Columbia 1B League action this coming Friday and Saturday – at Klickitat before returning home to take on Trout Lake.

Sunnyside Christian (4-0, 11-0) is scheduled to play at Trout Lake on Friday of this week, and will take to the road again the following night with a conference game at Lyle.
