CONNELL – It was the Lady Vikings who shined on the mat during a double-dual meet against Connell and Royal City last night.
Noemi Gutierrez (112 lbs.) and Cassandra Moreno earned two wins apiece.
Gutierrez pinned Connell’s Maria Enriquez in 3:05 before quickly dispatching Jackie Rivera of the Eagles in nine seconds.
Moreno, at 106 lbs., also won two bouts. She pinned Connell’s Britney Gomez in 1:36. The Lady Viking followed that up with a 10-1 decision over Kate Ayala.
The Mabton boys struggled in the double-dual Thursday. Emiliano Rodriguez was the only Viking to get a win.
He won a 7-3 decision over Royal City’s Elias Cardenas in the 132-lb. weight class.
“Finally a win for the guys,” said Mabton Coach John Kilian.
Rodriguez, however, was pinned by Cody Jenks of Connell in 1:27.
Putting up a battle before succumbing by pin to Hunter Follett of Royal was 220-pounder Isaac Velasquez. He landed on his back in the third period (5:02).
Velasquez also suffered a pin at the hands of Greg Heinen of the Eagles in 3:23.
Mabton’s Jose Amezcua (106 lbs.) lost by pin and teammate Gabriel Mireles lost the 113-lb. bout by technical fall (16-0).
Mabton wasn’t able to score any points against Connell and suffered a 59-0 loss to the Eagles, having given up six forfeits.
Amezcua won via forfeit against Royal City and Mireles lost by technical fall.
The Vikings lost 71-9 to Royal City.
