Bickleton chalked up a rare victory last Friday, its first in Greater Columbia 1B League play this season.
Playing at Klickitat, the Lady Pirate basketball team hung on down the stretch to eke out a 49-47 win.
Leading the charge for the winners was the duo of Lindsay Brown and Katrina Cardenas.
Brown, a junior, led all scorers in the game. She canned 19 points. She recorded a double-double by snaring a team-high 10 rebounds.
Only a freshman, Cardenas added a 14-point scoring performance. The underclassman, too, dished four assists and came away with four steals against the Vandals.
The Lady Pirates jumped out to an early lead on the Klickitat squad, forging a 15-8 first-quarter lead before pushing the advantage to 33-19 at the half.
The Vandals cut the deficit to 42-31 heading into the final quarter, then made a furious push in the final stanza, only to come up two points short at the buzzer.
The following night at home against the Trout Lake Mustangs, Bickleton stayed relatively close with the visitors, only trailing by an 18-10 margin at intermission. The ‘Stangs pushed their lead out to 36-25 through three quarters of play, then busted off a 19-2 scoring spurt in the final period to claim a convincing 55-27 victory.
Caitlin Scott keyed the Trout Lake win, pumping in a game-high 27 points for the Mustangs.
The top scorers for Bickleton on Saturday proved to be sophomore Lacy Cannon and eighth grader Jayce Alexander. Each girl netted 6 points.
Bickleton Coach Emily Barnhart said her club turned in a fairly strong defensive effort against Trout Lake early on, but as has been the case for much of the season, the Lady Pirates had difficulty in getting their shots to fall through the net.
It didn’t help Bickleton’s chances any, either, that four of the Lady Pirates went down with injuries in the second half of Saturday’s game
Bickleton (1-4, 4-10) returns to conference play this coming Friday with a home game against Lyle. The following night the Lady Pirates will be at Sunnyside Christian.
