BENTON CITY – Being short-handed this season, Mabton has had to look at its grapplers on an individual basis, not as a complete team, to see the silver lining in what is sometimes a rather ominous cloud.
Last night was no different as the Vikings handed Warden 48 points by forfeiting eight matches. Wahluke was handed 42 points in the process.
Gabriel Mireles (113 lbs.) created a bright spot in the Vikings’ line-up winning both his matches by pin. He led the bout with Carlos Guerra of Warden 7-0 before subduing the Cougar in 2:33.
Mireles battled Chris Morales of Wahluke next.
“It was a close match,” said Mabton Coach John Kilian.
The Viking was behind 10-7 before getting Morales on his back at the 5:15 mark.
Mabton continued to do well against the Warriors as they won four other matches.
Jose Amezcua in the 106-lb. weight class had a 7-0 advantage before subduing Wahluke’s Eric Barragan.
“Jose had him on his back twice before getting the pin…he had control of the match,” said Kilian.
It was at the 1:52 mark that the Viking ended the match.
Amezcua didn’t do as well against Johnny Martinez of Warden. The Cougar pinned the Viking after leading the match 5-0.
Noemi Gutierrez of Mabton suffered a fall to Wahluke’s Karina Tamayo in the 112-lb. weight class before subduing the Warriors’ Rosa Rangel in 1:03.
“Noemi had to overcome her own misgivings and lack of confidence to come back and win the second match,” said Kilian.
Mabton’s Rudy Ramirez pinned Wahluke’s Kevin Exquivel in 1:49, but sustained a fall against Robert Arredondo of the Cougars in the 160-lb. weight class.
The last bout won by the Vikings was between Salvador Urbina (195 lbs.) and Wahluke’s Salvador Gonzalez. Urbina led the match 9-4 before subduing the Cougar in 3:52.
Israel Valencia of Warden, however, was the victor by pin over Urbina in the Viking’s second bout.
In the 220-lb. weight class Isaac Velasquez of Mabton was pinned by both his competitors. He fell to Wahluke’s Eduardo Ortiz and Warden’s Mikey Hernandez.
Last night’s losses to Wahluke and Warden leaves Mabton with a 1-12 record for the 2013-14 season.
Tomorrow (Saturday) Mabton’s wrestling team will compete at the Zillah High School wrestling invite.
