Greyhounds win final CWAC match

WAPATO – For the most part this season, the Greyhounds have been victorious when they actually can get a wrestler out onto the mat.

Grandview’s problem has been gaping holes in its line-up card due to injury and ineligibility. That’s resulted in multiple forfeits, which have led to dual meet losses.

What started out looking like a repeat of earlier match-ups this season instead ended last night with a Greyhound sweep of all the matches wrestled and a win against Wapato on a tie-breaker.

Lady Greyhound Marizza Birrueta (106 lbs.) started off the meet with a second period pin to pick up her 27th win on the season.

Newly minted Greyhound wrestler Fidel Medina (113 lbs.) scored his second pin in as many nights in 2:21.

Diego Castaneda of Grandview was a bit sluggish in the 138-lb. match, but still managed a decision against Daniel Espinosa, one of Wapato’s best, by a 9-5 score.

Greyhound Joesiah Saunders (145 lbs.) ended his senior season undefeated and picked up his 27th win on the season with a first period pin.

At 152 lbs., Grandview’s Stevie Rodriguez also picked up a first period pin, and Brandon Marquez (160 lbs.) came away with a 3-1 decision.

In the final match of the meet, Grandview’s Juan Dominguez (285 lbs.) ended the scoring with a first period pin. That dramatic victory rallied the ‘Hounds from six points down, squaring the meet at 36-36.

The Wolves’ only team points came from six forfeits Grandview surrendered. Neither team had a wrestler at 220 lbs, so no match was wrestled and no team points were rewarded.

The result was seven wins for Grandview and six for Wapato. For a tie-breaker, the team with the most wins in the meet (including forfeits) earned another point.

That gave Grandview the win, 37-36. The Greyhounds finished CWAC play with a record of 3-6. Grandview will compete at the 2A District tourney on Feb. 7-8.
