Sunnyside charter school not among first seven approved

SEATTLE – The Washington State Charter School Commission yesterday made its final decision regarding which will be the first charter schools approved in accordance with I-1240.

Charter Schools of Sunnyside was not listed among the first seven applications that were approved at the public hearing in Seattle.

The schools approved include Excel Public Charter School in Kent, First Place Scholars Charter School in Seattle, Rainier Prep in Seattle, SOAR Academy of Tacoma, Summit Public Schools of Tacoma and Seattle, and Washington State Charter Middle School #1 of Tacoma.

Brittany Weaver, a founding member of Charter Schools of Sunnyside, earlier this week said the local grassroots organization was encouraged by the remarks made by the evaluators.

With some work on the financial plan for Charter Schools of Sunnyside, she said the organization will press forward in an effort to have its application approved by state officials next year.
