Jentry Simpson of Sunnyside swims to a fourth-place finish in the girls 8&U, 50-meter backstroke race last Thursday evening. Simpson clocked a time of 1:20.59. The winner, Prosser’s Amanda Peterson, swam the length of the Sunnyside pool in 56.88 seconds.

Round two action got underway for the Sunnyside swim team last Thursday, and it was more of the same for the Sharks.

Taking on Prosser for the second time this summer, the Sharks prevailed by an even bigger margin than in the first go-round with the Piranhas back in early June. The final score last Thursday was 507-232, compared to the 495-258 margin of victory Sunnyside claimed in the first match-up.

The Sharks, who compiled a 5-1 record through the first half of the season, continue their second trip through the Mid-Valley Summer Swim League schedule this coming Tuesday. The Sunnyside club will be in the Grandview pool to take on the Neptunes (1-6). Tomorrow’s meet is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.

In besting the visiting Piranhas last Thursday, Sunnyside was powered by its boys 10&U swimmers. The Sharks didn’t yield a single point to Prosser in that age division, claiming a 74-0 scoring advantage.

Myles Newhouse and Riley Pasicaran led the boys 10&U charge. Newhouse chalked up three victories in the individual events, with Pasicaran netting two wins.

Also tallying team points for Sunnyside in that age grouping were Chase Yanez and Logan Rodriguez. The two combined for a pair of runner-up finishes, three third-place showings and three fourth-place efforts.

Likewise, Sunnyside received a strong performance from its girls 12&U swimmers. They outscored their Prosser counterparts by a margin of 67-8.

The girls 12&U leaders for the Sharks included Bailey Hazzard, winner of the 50-meter butterfly and breaststroke races; Arianna Sanchez, who emerged victorious in the 50-meter backstroke and 200-meter individual medley; and Brianna Desmarais, first to the finish line in the 50-meter freestyle.

Also racking up girls 12&U team points for Sunnyside were Clarisa Calderon, Kameran Rodriguez and Sydney Banks.

Prosser’s strength surfaced in the boys and girls 8&U events.

Amanda Peterson won all four of the girls 8&U races for the Piranhas, and by large margins that ranged from 15.24 and 14.15 seconds in the free and ‘fly, to 8.65 and 3.88 seconds in the back and breaststroke.

Prosser’s Herky Easton-Wright was even more formidable at boys 8&U. In the 50-‘fly, he was 8.70 seconds quicker to the wall than any other swimmer. His margins of victory were even greater in the three other events, as they ranged from 12.94 seconds in the 50-free to 14.22 seconds in the 50-backstroke.

In terms of impressive wins, Sunnyside, too, received one from Johnny Heffron in the boys 14&U, 50-meter breaststroke race. He clocked the winning time of 41.83 seconds…just a whisker away from a seven-second margin of victory.

The most competitive race of the night was the girls 16&U, 50-meter freestyle. Less than seven-tenths of a second separated the four medalists. Sunnyside’s Summer Hazzard posted the fastest time, a clocking of 33.17 seconds. Prosser’s Mariana Perez was the runner-up at 33.46, with Katelyn Banks of Sunnyside nipping on Perez’s heels with a 33.47 clocking. Sunnyside’s Aidan Hudgens was a close fourth in 33.86 seconds.

The tightest one-two finish last Thursday came in the boys 12&U, 50-meter backstroke race. The photo finish ended up going Clay Schilperoort’s way, as the Shark recorded a time of 42.88 seconds. Prosser’s Coleman Wright was deemed the runner-up with a clocking of 42.91 seconds.

In the 200-meter individual medley races, the only real suspense came at girls 14&U. In that one, Prosser’s Ali Cox edged Sunnyside’s Chloe Messmore by eight one-hundreds of a second.
