Sunnyside’s D’Angelo Garcia makes his way to the finish line in the boys 10&U, 40-yard breaststroke last night. Garcia posted a time of 56.32 seconds. The winner – teammate Myles Newhouse – clocked a time of 34.90 seconds.

GRANDVIEW – Claiming victory in 62 of the 73 races staged last night, the Sunnyside Sharks made off with a convincing 629-129 win over the host Grandview Neptunes.

It’s the second lopsided win Sunnyside has notched against the Neptunes this season.

Tuesday evening’s victory boosted the Sharks’ Mid-Valley Summer Swim League record to 7-1. Grandview slipped to 1-7 in dual meet action.

Besides stealing the spotlight in the winner’s circle last night, the Sharks flexed their muscles in displaying team depth. Sunnyside outscored the Neptunes by a 160-32 margin via its second-place finishes. The Sharks also piled up a 212-32 scoring advantage against Grandview based on third and fourth-place performances.

Of the 11 victories Grandview mustered, only one came in the girls’ races.

That win was notched by Jedida Ramos. She clipped Sunnyside’s Avery Bonzi, a three-time winner in the girls 8&U age division last night, by a third of a second in the 40-yard breaststroke.

Grandview’s Brendon Lynch-McGhan swam unopposed in the boys 18&U age division, and picked up the win in all five individual events as a result.

Lynch-McGhan also swam the opening leg on the winning 160-yard medley relay squad at boys 18&U. His relay partners included Tavian Valenzuela, Baeley Febus and Nathaniel Gutierrez.

In racking up the 62 first-place finishes last night, one of the most impressive victories Sunnyside had was chalked up by Gage Newhouse in the boys 8&U, 40-yard butterfly. He touched the wall 10 and two-third seconds ahead of the next closest finisher.

The Sharks also received a pair of overpowering performances from boys 10&U competitors Riley Pasicaran and Myles Newhouse.

Pasicaran - in the 40-yard butterfly – won by a 6.22-second margin; and Newhouse – in the boys 40-yard breaststroke – prevailed by 6.04 seconds over the runner-up.

Kyle Clough, too, turned a few heads last night. Competing in the boys 8&U, 40-yard backstroke, the Sunnyside swimmer raced the length of the pool in 45.94 seconds. The next fastest time was 51.71.

The lone swimmer last night to break the 20-second mark in covering one length of the Grandview pool was Sunnyside’s Matthew Marquez. A boys 16&U competitor, he accomplished the feat in the 40-yard freestyle, posting a time of 19.46 seconds.

In the closest finish of the night in the 40-yard events, Sunnyside swimmers Kylah Bunch and Janessa Frank touched the wall within one-tenth of a second of one another in the backstroke. Bunch captured the photo finish victory.

In the 160-yard individual medley races, the four medalists in the girls 16&U age division staged a nip-and-tuck affair. The four, all Sharks, included Katelyn Banks, Lindsay Schilperoort, Aydan Harrington and Kalie Bestebreur. The quartet posted times ranging from Banks’ clocking of 2:10.31 to the 2:12.81 time set by Bestebreur.

The Sunnyside swim club is scheduled to host the Othello Barracudas this coming Thursday. The Grandview Neptunes are slated to compete at the Naches pool the same night.
