Dolphins win battle of league heavyweights

SELAH – The Selah Dolphins, unbeaten in dual-meet action this summer and seeking a fifth consecutive league title, last night dealt the Sunnyside Sharks only their second loss of the season.

Both of Sunnyside’s losses in 2014 have come to the Dolphins (9-0).

The Sharks suffered a 471-310 defeat to Selah back in mid-June. Last night, the Dolphins completed the season sweep of Sunnyside, now 8-2 in the league standings, by notching a 429-325 win.

One of the main reasons the host Dolphins got by Sunnyside Tuesday evening was because of Selah’s firepower in the boys 14&U age division. The quartet of Carson Vick, Jacob Frampton, Gunnar Newell and Benjamin Blakney led the Dolphins to a 74-1 scoring advantage in that age bracket.

Selah, too, dominated the girls 10&U age division, outscoring the Sharks by a margin of 67-8. Leading the way for the Dolphins in those events was Trista Hull.

She won all four of the 40-yard races, as well as the 160-yard individual medley. Hull’s most spectacular splash of the night came in the 40-butterfly, as she snapped the Selah pool record that had stood since 1975. She raced the length of the pool in 25.88 seconds. The old mark was 26.10.

Selah boys 8&U swimmer Charlie Hudson also turned in a whale of an effort Tuesday evening. The youngster chalked up wins in all four of the events in his age bracket, and by considerable margins. In the 40-yard ‘fly and freestyle, Hudson won by 4.31 and 5.99 seconds, respectively. He prevailed by 6.39 and 9.93 seconds in the 40-breaststroke and backstroke races.

The biggest winner for Sunnyside Tuesday night was girls 18&U competitor Brittany Broersma. She swept aside Selah’s lone entry – Mikel Perez – in all five of the events in that age division. Broersma also swam on the two winning medley and freestyle relay squads in her age bracket.

Sunnyside’s Avery Bonzi won three of the four events in the girls 8&U age bracket. Two of those victories came in fairly closely contested races, but in the 40-yard ‘fly Bonzi won going away with a clocking of 42.19 seconds. The next best finish was 57.77.

The Sharks’ 16&U girls also flexed their muscles against their Selah counterparts. Kalie Bestebreur nailed down wins in the 40-breast and back events; and Sunnyside teammates Katelyn Banks (‘fly), Summer Hazzard (free) and Lindsay Schilperoort (IM) each picked up a victory. All told, the Sharks outscored Selah by a 63-12 margin in that age grouping.

Sunnyside, too, received strong efforts last night from Clay Schilperoort at boys 12&U and Jolissa Mendoza at girls 14&U. Each of those two won two individual events and swam on two winning relay squads.

Boys 10&U swimmers Myles Newhouse and Riley Pasicaran also helped the Sharks make a run at Selah, as the pair combined for four wins in the individual events and teamed for one relay victory.

The Sharks will entertain the Toppenish Tarpons this coming Thursday in the Sunnyside pool. A victory against the Tarpons will sew up a second-place finish for the Sharks in the Mid-Valley Summer Swim League standings.
