Shawn Wiederspohn, one of the volunteer timers, handles two stopwatches during last night’s meet between the host Sunnyside Sharks and visiting Toppenish Tarpons.

Last night, a monkey wrench got thrown into what looked to be a two-horse race at next week’s Mid-Valley Summer Swim League championship meet.

Selah and Sunnyside appeared to be the prohibitive favorites to duke it out in Othello weekend after next for top honors in 2014. Now, though, it seems the Toppenish Tarpons are in the mix.

The Tarpons steam-rolled their way into Sunnyside last night and nearly made off with a win over the Sharks. In the end, the Sunnyside swimmers staved off the upset bid, pulling out a six-point victory against Toppenish.

In the first match-up of the season between the two clubs back on June 26, the Sharks trekked to the Toppenish pool and came away with a relatively comfortable 54-point margin of victory. Last night, Sunnyside only came out on top by a 403-397 score.

Thursday evening’s narrow victory boosted the Sharks’ dual-meet record on the season to 9-2, second best in the league standings to date, while Toppenish fell to a third best 6-4. Both teams are trailing the unbeaten Selah Dolphins (10-0).

Sunnyside has one dual-meet remaining, at Naches next Wednesday, before the seven-team league championships in Othello on July 25-27.

In fending off the Tarpons last night, Sunnyside got a six-win performance from girls 18&U competitor Brittany Broersma.

She was never pushed in the four 50-meter races she swam. Competing against Toppenish’s lone entry – Sabrina Allen – Broersma won by 4.44 seconds in the 50-freestyle. In the three other 50-meter events, her margins of victory ranged from 10.23 to 14.12 seconds.

Broersma, who elected not to compete in the 200-meter individual medley, also swam on the two winning girls 18&U relay squads (medley and freestyle).

Sunnyside also recorded some impressive victories from the likes of Riley Pasicaran, Syrina Arevalo, Avery Bonzi, Gage Newhouse and Clay Schilperoort.

Pasicaran, at boys 10&U, was five and a half seconds quicker to the finish line than the next closest swimmer in the 50-meter butterfly.

Arevalo cleaned up on the competition in the girls 8&U, 50-meter breaststroke. She recorded a winning time of 1:10.68, more than 13 seconds faster than the rest of the field.

Bonzi, also a girls 8&U swimmer for the Sharks, won by margins of 6.72 and 9.90 seconds in the 50-meter backstroke and freestyle events, respectively.

Newhouse, at boys 8&U, claimed an eight-second margin of victory in the 50-‘fly.

And Schilperoort, competing in the boys 12&U, 50-meter backstroke, won by an impressive margin of 7.60 seconds.

Sunnyside, too, received a nifty one-two punch from Janessa Frank and Jolissa Mendoza in the girls 14&U, 50-meter ‘fly. The duo claimed the top two spots with clockings of 37.00 and 37.14 seconds, well ahead of third-placing finishing Leslie Lizola of Toppenish (40.09).

Boys 10&U swimmer Myles Newhouse also socked away the competition in the 50-breast. The Shark won the event in a time of 51.96 seconds, 5.13 seconds clear of the field.

A newcomer to the Sunnyside team also made big strides last night. Eriberto Rivera, in the boys 8&U age division, picked up a rare win. He bested the field in the 50-backstroke, the winner by more than three seconds over his closest rival. Rivera also came away with the second-place ribbons in the 50-‘fly and breast races, and was fourth in the 50-free.

Toppenish’s most impressive wins were notched by Janealle Sutterlict and Katrina Johnson.

Sutterlict, at girls 12&U, touched the wall 3.28 seconds ahead of the field in the 50-meter freestyle, and prevailed by a 34.85-second margin in the 200-meter IM.

Johnson got the Tarpons the victory in the girls 16&U, 200-individual medley. Her margin of victory was 15.82 seconds.
