In an effort to minimize the length of commencement exercises on graduation night, Sunnyside High School last year began announcing the names of scholarship recipients in a special ceremony the night beforehand.
This year’s scholarship and awards presentation will take place tomorrow (Thursday) in the SHS auditorium at 5:30 p.m.
“Really, the intent is to shorten graduation,” said Holly Ohler, SHS career and technical education director.
She said, “With graduation classes getting so large, this (special presentation night) cuts back on the length of the graduation ceremony.”
Ohler said the decision to announce scholarships and awards in a separate ceremony was made after receiving feedback from community members, parents and staff, who believed a special night “…would be nice.”
Community members and different organizations that have awarded the scholarships and awards have been invited to present them to the graduates at the ceremony.
“It gives the ceremony a personal touch…something that couldn’t be done when the scholarships and awards were presented at graduation,” said Ohler.
The public, she said, is welcome to attend tomorrow’s ceremony.
