Mabton bridge closure looms

MABTON – The bridge to Mabton on the Sunnyside-Mabton Road will be closed for repairs later this summer, according to Washington State Department of Transportation Project Engineer Moe Davari.

Cracks were discovered in the bridge during a recent repaving, leading the DOT to restrict loads on the bridge to under 6,000 pounds.

“The closure will be for repair work to allow larger vehicles on the bridge,” Davari said. “At this point we have no idea when it will happen, but it will probably be in late July or August.”

Davari said plans for the repairs are currently being made and bids collected for the project.

“We are aware of the harvest time and want to get it done before then,” he said. “Three tons is nothing, the bridge needs to be able to handle trucks.”
