It’s official…marijuana businesses a no-go in rural Yakima County

YAKIMA – Yakima County commissioners on Tuesday of this week officially approved the ordinance that prohibits recreational marijuana retailers, processors and producers from establishing their businesses in unincorporated areas of the county.

Ordinance 4-2014 amends Yakima County code title 15 and 15A, prohibiting recreational marijuana businesses.

Commissioners last week explained they were interested in respecting the voice of Yakima County voters, of which a majority rejected I-502. Commissioners also said they took into consideration Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s opinion that municipal governments could ban such businesses.

In addition, the commissioners each said they considered the information provided to them after a series of public hearings.

The commissioners this past Tuesday approved the ordinance prohibiting the production, processing and retail sales of recreational marijuana in all Yakima County zoning districts by a 2-0 vote. Commissioner Mike Leita was not present for the commissioners’ meeting.
