Celebrating the re-birth of her mother 16 years ago by attempting to raise $4,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Nohelia Peterson of Grandview is hosting a veggie burger feed and silent auction this coming Saturday.
The benefit to aid cancer research will be held at Sunnyside’s Seventh-day Adventist Church, located at 1875 E. Lincoln Ave. The Saturday, March 15, fundraiser starts at 5:30 p.m., and is open to all community residents.
There is no set admission price for Saturday’s benefit event. “We’ll just be taking donations at the door,” Peterson said.
The Grandview woman said last October marked the 16th year since her mother successfully underwent a bone marrow transplant at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.
“It saved her life,” said Peterson. “We praise God for that.”
In an attempt to save others from cancer, Peterson’s goal is to raise $4,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Every day, Peterson explained, 349 Americans are diagnosed with a blood cancer, “…one every four minutes,” she said. Of those 349, 119 lose their fight, Peterson added.
Peterson said the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society uses the donations it receives to conduct research for a cure and to provide financial assistance to families struggling with the financial burden of cancer treatments.
Peterson’s fundraising efforts also include securing pledges and donations from local residents as she spreads the word about the work of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at the Saunders Subaru Victoria Half Ironman being held in June in Victoria, B.C.
“In completing this triathlon, my hope is to raise awareness and funds for research leading to a cure for leukemia and related cancers,” she said.
“I am running this race in honor of God, through whom all things are possible, and for my mother,” added Peterson, who began training for the half ironman this past January.
Lower Yakima Valley residents can make a financial donation to help Peterson achieve her fundraising goal through a website she established: http://pages.teamintraining.org/wa/nbhtri14/nohelia.
