Local residents can learn the basics before they buy chicks during two coming educational events on raising poultry.
The classes, sponsored by Bleyhl Country Stores, will be Saturday, March 15, in Pasco and Monday, March 17, in Sunnyside. Purina nutrition expert Mike Miller will explain how to properly care for chicks, with emphasis on feed, housing and health issues, as well as discussing care for adult birds.
In Pasco, Miller will be available for an informal Q&A session from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the store, 1126 W. Ainsworth St. Customers are encouraged to drop in at their convenience to talk with Miller and to take advantage of Chick Days “cheep” prices.
The Sunnyside event will be a sit-down seminar at 5:30 p.m. in the store, 1720 Eastway Drive. No pre-registration is required. Participants at both events will receive discount feed coupons.
This is the first year Bleyhl has sponsored educational classes in conjunction with its annual March Chick Days event, said Dennis Ross, store operations manager.
Bleyhl sells about 20,000 chicks each spring from retail stores in Toppenish, Zillah, Pasco, Sunnyside and Grandview.
Chick Days features special pricing on both birds and products. Ross said this year’s official event is slated for March 15-31, although meat chicks are already in stock in most Bleyhl stores. Customers should talk with store managers to special order specific breeds and pullets.
Bleyhl Country Stores are part of a local farmer-owned cooperative initially founded in 1964 to serve agricultural needs in the Yakima Valley. Today, Bleyhl Farm Service Inc. includes retail, petroleum and agronomy divisions, serving both ag and residential customers throughout Central Washington and northeastern Oregon.
