Grandview’s doubles players strong against Prosser Mustangs

GRANDVIEW – Four of the six doubles matches staged in Grandview last Saturday went the Greyhounds’ way.

Visiting Prosser won all four singles matches, though, which allowed the Mustangs to gallop off with a pair of 3-2 victories over Grandview’s boys and girls tennis squads.

Saturday’s match-up between the two CWAC foes was a non-league affair.

Despite the losses, Grandview Coach Ronda Penwell was buoyed by the efforts of her athletes.

“There were three different teams that went to a tiebreaker in one of their sets,” she said.

Penwell noted, too, that several of her doubles players picked up their first wins of the season. That included freshmen Roger Escareno and Alfonso Granados, who at No. 2 doubles eked out a 7-5, 7-6(8-6) victory against the Prosser duo of Austin Dennis and Gabriel Klingele.

“They (Escareno and Granados) have improved a lot just within the first few weeks of the season and show a lot of promise for the future,” said Penwell.

Also securing a win for Grandview last Saturday were first-year players Anthony Gutierrez and Isaiah Villarreal. The No. 3 doubles players notched a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

Penwell said the Grandview girls doubles teams also turned in strong showings.

The Greyhounds have another non-league match scheduled for this Tuesday, at Othello. Grandview will then be out of action through all of spring break.
