Banging out 16 hits, four apiece by Luke Wavrin and Brant Bosma, the Sunnyside Christian Knights defeated the Seattle Christian Warriors by a 15-7 score last Saturday morning. In the second of the jamboree games hosted by the Knights baseball team, Seattle Christian beat the Tri-City Prep Jaguars.
In the jamboree finale the Knights fell to Tri-City Prep, 8-4, leaving all three teams with identical 1-1 records on the day.
In besting Seattle Christian Saturday morning, Wavrin slapped four hits in five official trips to the plate. Wavrin’s big hit was a clutch, two-out RBI double in the bottom of the fifth. He ended up with three RBI in the game.
Bosma added a 4-for-4 effort at the dish in the Knights’ 15-7 victory. Two of his hits were for extra bases, one a double and the other a sixth-inning homer that bounced off the outfield fence.
Also coming through big in Sunnyside Christian’s win were Brandon Moore, who went 2-for-4 at bat; and Ryan Bangs, who slapped a two-run single in the first inning and laid down a two-run squeeze bunt in the sixth.
Wyatt Hoff, SCHS’s starting pitcher against the Warriors, went four full innings in picking up the victory. He scattered four hits while fanning five. Moore replaced Hoff on the mound in the fifth, finishing off the pitching chores.
In the 8-4 loss to Tri-City Prep, knuckleball pitcher Kevin Geist kept the Knights in check, only allowing four hits. Geist went the distance, striking out five and walking only two.
Sunnyside Christian scored its four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Adrian Heffron had a run-scoring double in the frame, and Bangs ripped a two-run double.
Heffron was the lone Knight with more than one hit against the Jaguars, going 2-for-3.
Sunnyside Christian (3-1) is scheduled to play a doubleheader at Liberty Christian this coming Tuesday. Liberty Christian claimed second-place honors at the State tournament last year.
