Prieto, Shafer notch wins for GHS at Papa Wells invite

Brown secures four ‘Top 3’ finishes for Bickleton High girls

PREP TRACK & FIELD

MOXEE – Grandview High School seniors Kasi Prieto and Jamila Shafer each grabbed a first-place finish at the annual Papa Wells Track & Field Invitational, hosted by the East Valley Red Devils this past Saturday.

One of the largest track meets in Central Washington early on in the spring, the non-scoring affair drew a field of 19 schools this year.

Prieto notched her victory in the 400-meter sprint. Shafer got Grandview its second win at the prestigious invite, competing in the discus.

Bickleton High School junior Lindsay Brown also turned in a whale of an effort last Saturday. She claimed runner-up honors in three girls’ events – the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and the high jump – and placed third in the 100-meter dash.

In the shorter of the two hurdles races, Brown got edged by three, one-hundreds of a second for top honors, which went to Eisenhower senior Devin Simpson. In the longer 300-meter hurdles event, Brown finished second to Ellensburg sophomore Jordyn Arlt.

Brown turned in a 4-10 effort in the girls’ high jump, second only to Ellensburg senior Bridgette Wichterman (5-2).

In the girls’ 100-meter dash, Brown was third with a clocking of 13.84 seconds. Prosser freshman Jamie Fassler finished second (13.80), and LaSalle sophomore Lauren Newman was first (12.94).

For Bickleton’s boys, sophomore Nathan Powers had the best day. He placed third in the 110-meter hurdles and finished sixth in the 300-meter hurdles.

Grandview’s Prieto, in emerging as the victor in the girls’ 400m race, was the clear winner. She circled the oval in 1:04.81, nearly three-quarters of a second ahead of the runner-up, Ellensburg junior Clare Casey (1:05.53).

Prieto also teamed with Lizeth Valencia, Ayisha Guillen and Kaysie Kollmar for a second-place finish in the girls’ 4x200 relay. The GHS foursome toured the track in a time of 1:58.40. Zillah was first from the seven-team field with a clocking of 1:54.89.

Prieto, too, returned home to Grandview with a fourth-place showing in the girls’ 100m sprint (13.85).

Shafer’s shining moment came in the girls’ discus. The Grandview senior got the platter to fly a distance of 113-1. The next best throw on the day was Eisenhower sophomore Zoe Roberson’s toss of 109-9.

Shafer, too, recorded a third-place performance for the Lady ‘Hounds in the pole vault (7-6), and managed eighth-place efforts in the javelin (85-2) and triple jump (29-10.5).

Grandview’s boys ended up with two ‘Top 5’ performances Saturday. Junior Steven Razo placed third in the 300-meter hurdles, and senior Andy Rodriguez was fifth in the triple jump.
