RICHLAND – The Sunnyside Lady Grizzlies yesterday struggled against the Hanford Falcons, only getting two hits against the home team’s pitcher.
Those two hits didn’t provide any runs, either.
“We kinda took ourselves out,” Sunnyside Coach Ralph Mendoza said of the 16-0 loss.
He said Hanford’s pitcher is extremely good. She was relieved in the third inning, which could have been good news for the Lady Grizz.
“We had some base running blunders,” Mendoza said, citing an example of a runner forgetting to tag up at second base.
Hanford, on the flip side, took advantage of its 14 hits. The Falcons scored 14 runs in the first two innings and the final two runs came in the fourth inning of the five-inning game.
On the mound for the first two innings was Amber Cornwell. She was relieved by Monique Gill in the third inning.
After a few base on balls, Cheyenne Fernandez took over for a third of the fourth inning before Cornwell returned to close the game.
Gill and Dorinda Campos were the two Lady Grizzlies to get on base throughout the game.
Sunnyside tomorrow (Thursday) will host Riverview for a non-league affair.
