PREP FASTPITCH SOFTBALL
RICHLAND – The rebuilding continues for Sunnyside Christian’s fastpitch program as yesterday the Lady Knights were swept 11-0 and 17-0 in a doubleheader at Liberty Christian.
The Patriots held Sunnyside Christian to a single hit in each contest, which were called after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. Pitcher Aydan Harrington slapped the Lady Knights’ base hit in the opener and Kristen Broersma delivered Sunnyside Christian’s hit in game two.
Back after a two-year absence, the Sunnyside Christian fastpitch program is developing with the big picture in mind, says Coach Kelly Harrington.
She notes only three of her 12 players have fastpitch experience, and notes the sport is in a position similar to that of the Knight 8-man football program which started up five years ago.
“We’re basically starting from scratch,” Harrington said. “It feels like we’re starting a brand new team.”
She says the goal for this season is consistency and to eventually challenge opponents.
“We’re working on fundamentals, the basics. Once we get those the girls will be competitive,” Harrington said. “I’m just happy the girls are sticking with it. We’re learning the sport and keeping a positive attitude.”
Sunnyside Christian (0-4) will have extra time to work on fastpitch fundamentals, as they don’t return to action until April 10 in a doubleheader at White Swan.
