Little Grapplers continue to impress

YAKIMA – Of the 51 members of the Sunnyside Little Grapplers who competed at last Saturday’s wrestling tournament at West Valley High School, 31 returned home with hardware.

Of those 31 trophy winners, 10 youngsters secured tourney titles.

“I’d say we were pretty successful at this tournament, with 10 champs, 12 second-placers and nine third-placers,” said Little Grapplers Coach Daniel Guillen.

The Sunnyside coach said he was also pleased with the improvement his first-year wrestlers are showing.

“They are really coming around and showing their real potential,” he said. “Their confidence level is getting higher and higher with every tournament.”

The 10 tournament champions from the Sunnyside wrestling club included Jesse Denson (7/8-year-olds); Marcos Velasquez, Leonardo Avalos, Jesus Carreon and Ignacio Payan (9/10-year-olds); Jaden Siller, Abraham Arreola and Frankie Magallan (11/12-year-olds); and Alfonso Ramos and Myles Davila (13/14-year-olds).

Little Grapplers who earned runner-up honors in their weight classes last Saturday included Damien Diaz and Julian Gonzalez (5/6-year-olds); Rey Palomarez (7/8-year-olds); Joan Gonzalez, J’naya Siller and Mayela Rangel (9/10-year-olds); Isaac Morales, Eternity Yanez, Eddie Davila, Rocky Rangel and Bianca Talamantes (11/12-year-olds); and Isaac Rodriguez (13/14-year-olds).

The Sunnyside wrestlers who returned home with third-place medals included Joe Ayala (5/6-year-olds); Jaden Jasso (7/8-year-olds); Chase Yanez (9/10-year-olds); Anthony Denson, Zakkery Garcia, Bryan Soto and Jorge Gonzalez (11/12-year-olds); and Isaac Guillen and Moises Morales (13/14-year-olds).

The Sunnyside coach said he expects to take about 25 club members to a tournament this coming Saturday at Mead.
