BOYS PREP SOCCER
MABTON – In what was a battle between two SCAC foes last night, it was the Granger boys soccer team that prevailed 2-1 over host Mabton.
“It was a good game,” said Mabton Coach Junior Garcia.
He said the teams battled back-and-forth across the pitch. “It was intense.”
The Spartans drew first blood on a penalty kick in the 15th minute of the match. Uriel Sanchez recorded the goal.
The Vikings, undeterred, fought back and equalized the match in the 27th minute. Mauricio Palominos delivered a pass to Tony Espinoza, who capitalized on the opportunity.
The teams were locked up until the final minutes of the match. With just eight minutes until the final whistle, Granger’s Freddie Sojo scored the game-winning goal.
“The teams battled…everything was back-and-forth,” said Garcia.
He said the match could have gone either way, but it was the Spartans who took advantage and capitalized to earn the victory.
“The entire (Viking) team played very well,” said Garcia.
He said the match was physical, and Mabton didn’t disappoint him.
The Vikings had seven scoring opportunities, and were denied by Granger keeper Ulises Arenas six times.
The Spartans recorded nine shots on goal. Mabton keeper Juan Macedo kept the ball from hitting the back of the net seven times.
Mabton (3-1) tomorrow (Saturday) will travel to Wahluke.
