YAKIMA – Both the Sunnyside Grizzlies and Bickleton Pirates were among the 30-plus schools that competed in brisk and blustery conditions at last Saturday’s Don Holder Relays.

The Eisenhower Cadets hosted the annual track and field invite.

For Sunnyside, Brittney Broersma notched the best finish on the day. Competing in the girls’ 300m hurdles, the senior nailed down the fourth fastest time with a clocking of 48.50 seconds. Moses Lake’s Alysha Overland put up the top time, a clocking of 46.25.

Sunnyside Coach Darren Mezger said Broersma’s time was competitive considering the conditions. “The weather was bad, so it was cool to see the kids still get good marks.”

Broersma also teamed with Emilee Maldonado, Navi King and Aylin Bautista for a seventh-place showing in the girls’ 4x100 relay. The quartet sped around the oval in 55.28 seconds. A foursome from Southridge won the race with a clocking of 50.58 seconds.

As a team, the Sunnyside girls finished in 21st place with four points. Southridge took top honors with 66 points.

The best finish Sunnyside’s boys were able to muster last Saturday came from senior Elijah Pena. He placed eighth in the 300m hurdles (43.55). The winning time was 41.54 seconds, set by Henry Jackson High School senior John-Robert Woolley.

Mezger said Pena is still recovering from a hamstring injury and was limited in action last Saturday.

The one other ‘Top 10’ finish the Grizzlies garnered in the varsity events was earned by the foursome of Xavier Cortez, Javier Mendoza, Steven Gonzalez and Fabian Gonzalez. The four Sunnyside athletes placed eighth in the 4x100 relay (53.84).

Henry Jackson claimed the top spot among boys teams with 73.97 points. The Grizzlies did not tally any team points.

Mezger said several Sunnyside athletes were missing last Saturday due to the start of spring break.

In the freshman/sophomore events, the lone ‘Top 5’ finish on the day for Sunnyside came from Madison Marro. She placed fifth in the girls’ discus with a throw of 64-6. The winning throw from among the underclassmen was 98-1, set by Elly Johnson of Moses Lake.

Bickleton’s biggest achievement last Saturday came in the girls’ high jump. Junior Lindsay Brown bested the 30-girl field, clearing the bar at 5-feet even.

Bickleton Coach Chris Venema, acknowledging it’s still early in the season, said Brown is now the No. 1 seed in the girls’ high jump among Class 1B athletes statewide.

The Lady Pirate also competed in the triple jump, placing 12th with a leap of 29-8.75. In the 100-meter dash, Brown posted the 17th fastest time on the day (14.08).

Bickleton’s girls scored a total of 10 team points, to tie Ellensburg, Riverside and Cedar Park Christian for 14th place.

Bickleton received a pair of ‘Top 10’ finishes from sophomore Nathan Powers and junior Clint Strader, as well.

Powers, in the boys’ high jump, placed sixth with an effort of 5-8.

Strader, in the boys’ pole vault, had the 10th best vault on the day (10-0).

The Pirates recorded half a team point to finish in 22nd place.

Sunnyside doesn’t return to action until Thursday, April 10, when it hosts Grandview.

“Over the break hopefully we’ll get healthy and have a full team to compete and fight for some State berths,” said Mezger.
