TOPPENISH – Junior Steven Razo was the lone Grandview athlete to notch a victory at a four-school CWAC boys’ track and field meet hosted by the Toppenish Wildcats yesterday afternoon.
Besides the host Wildcats and Grandview, Ellensburg and Othello competed at the 2A league meet on Thursday.
Razo bested a 10-runner field in the 300m hurdles. He sped to the finish line in 40.75 seconds. Othello senior Marco Pena, the runner-up, was just over a third of a second behind him with a clocking of 41.12.
The hurdles specialist also ran the opening leg of Grandview’s 4x100 relay team. Razo - along with Alex Torres, Eric Medina and Andy Rodriguez – posted the second fastest time on the day from the eight relay squads that competed. The foursome hit the finish line in 46.41 seconds. Toppenish’s entry in the 4x100 relay sprinted to the tape with a clocking of 44.51 seconds.
Rodriguez, Grandview’s anchor on the 4x100 relay, earned a second-place finish yesterday in the 100-meter dash, as well. From a field of 41 sprinters, he put up a time of 10.94 seconds. That was bested only by Toppenish junior Brent Evans, who recorded a clocking of 10.81 seconds.
The one other standout performance by Grandview’s boys came from its 4x400 relay squad. Greyhounds Carlos Granados, Miguel Moreno, Alex Sobranes and Jose Velazquez finished second in a time of 3:46.43. An Ellensburg foursome won (3:36.03).
Grandview’s track team is scheduled to compete at the Keith Jewett Invitational in Ellensburg tomorrow (Saturday).
