BOYS PREP SOCCER
WARDEN – The Mabton boys soccer team was unable to snap its recent losing streak this past Saturday against host Warden.
The Vikings dropped their season record to 5-10, suffering a 4-1 loss to the Cougars.
Mabton battled the wind, as well as a team that worked as a cohesive unit.
Orlando Alba of the Cougars earned a hat trick. He opened the scoring 34 minutes into the match with the first goal.
Warden had a 1-0 lead at intermission.
Mabton equalized the match in the 44th minute. The lone goal for the Vikings was made by Oscar Aguilar. He found an opening in the Cougars’ defense and exploited the opportunity to put the ball between the crossbars.
Alba answered to re-take the lead in the 50th minute of the match. Alba’s third goal came in the 59th minute.
His brother, Osvaldo, put the match away with an insurance shot with five minutes left until the final whistle.
Viking coach Junior Garcia said, “We didn’t put the ball away when we had the opportunities…we need to work on finishing.”
Warden (7-8) is a team that could have been defeated. The Cougars earlier this season lost 2-1 to Connell in a shootout, whereas the Vikings defeated the Eagles 2-0.
Warden dominated the match with 26 shots on goal. Mabton keeper Juan Macedo shut the door on 18 of those scoring attempts.
Mabton aimed for the back of the net five times.
Garcia said, although Mabton is playing without several starters, the team has the capability of securing a win.
Tomorrow (Tuesday) the Vikes host the No. 2 SCAC team of Highland (12-2) to close out the 2014 regular season.
