Sunnyside police handle routine calls

Although it wasn’t a quiet weekend in Sunnyside, many of the calls made to police were routine.

A loud noise alerted neighbors in the 900 block of South 13th Street on Sunday, leading them to believe they were hearing gunshots. One resident phoned police to the possible gunfire. A number of officers searched the area and were unable to find evidence of a gunshot.

A vehicle was reported stolen from the 300 block of Weatherwax Street last Friday, a shoplifting incident was reported at Walmart yesterday (Sunday) and a vehicle was reported stolen from the 1200 block of East Kearney Avenue on Saturday.

Three juveniles were taken into custody for the shoplifting incident and neither of the vehicles were reportedly located as of this morning.

Officers also assisted the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office Saturday when a caller reported seeing someone shoot a transformer in the 600 block of West South Hill Road. The witness reported seeing a black passenger vehicle with two male passengers at the scene. Officials from Pacific Power and the Sunnyside Fire Department assisted with the call.

Sunnyside police, too, responded to a report of a carnival ride leaking hydraulic fluid that was running into the storm drains on Saturday at South Fifth Street and East Edison Avenue. Police notified public works of the problem for clean-up.

In addition, Sunnyside police have since Friday responded to 12 automatic alarms, three animal complaints, two assault reports, six domestic violence calls, three DUI reports, four juvenile problems, five noise complaints, a report of lewd conduct, 12 suspicious activity calls, 14 traffic incidents, a weapons violation and three graffiti calls.

Sunnyside police officers, too, fielded 10 informational calls, provided three assists to citizens and three agency assists.
