The Davis Pirates outfought the Sunnyside tennis squads yesterday, winning 6-1 over the boys squad and 7-0 over the girls squad, but Grizzly Coach David Downing said his team played well.
“Overall the matches fell short, sometimes only by one-point games,” he said. “An impressive win was the No. 3 boys doubles. Rissto Barboza and Bryce Murphy won an exciting three-set match, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. They did a great job and never gave up.”
The rest of Sunnyside’s boys team (2-6, 2-10) didn’t fare as well, although Downing said Zach Halma, playing in the No. 3 singles spot, lost a close match by twin sets of 6-4.
“He battled hard,” said Downing.
Sunnyside’s No. 1 boys singles player, Alexis Osuna, took his match to three sets. He lost the first set 6-0, but came back to tie the match with a 6-4 win before finally losing 6-1 in the final set.
The Sunnyside girls squad (0-8, 1-11) couldn’t earn a win, although Downing said many of the games were very close at times.
Downing said Sunnyside’s No. 3 girls singles player, Roxy Plancarte, served well and took games to 40-40 often. Plancarte eventually lost in two sets, 6-1, 6-2.
The teams will head to Eastmont tomorrow, Thursday, and then host Grandview at home this coming Friday.
