PREP FASTPITCH SOFTBALL
WALLA WALLA – The Sunnyside Christian Lady Knight fastpitch team found it tough going last night in a pair of losses to DeSales.
Sunnyside Christian was “10-runned” in both games by the host Irish – with the contests called early due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Even so, the Lady Knights made things plenty interesting in game one’s 11-1 defeat, trailing just 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth. That all changed when the Irish plated eight runs in the frame’s home half.
“DeSales went on a hitting binge,” Sunnyside Christian Coach Kelly Harrington said of the rally. “We played great defense in game one against a very good team. I was proud of our team staying right with them for five innings.”
Pitcher Aydan Harrington was the only Lady Knight to get a hit in game one, and came around to score on two passed balls. She also was the hurler in the nightcap for Sunnyside Christian.
Defensive standouts for Sunnyside Christian included McKenzie Benjert, Jenna DenHoed, Annie DenHoed and Jordan Harrington.
DeSales pulled away in game two and prevailed by a score of 14-1. Aydan Harrington, Benjert and Annie DenHoed all smacked base hits for the Lady Knights in the nightcap. Jordan Harrington accounted for the only Sunnyside Christian run when she scored on Benjert’s fielder’s choice.
Sunnyside Christian (6-12) plays its final home game next Monday against Kittitas. On Saturday, May 24, Sunnyside Christian will play a District playoff game in Kittitas.
With the improvement these girls have shown, I’m very excited to see how we will compete going into regional playoffs,” Coach Harrington said of her team, which is competing this season after the program was on a two-year hiatus.
