Greyhounds sneak past Wolfpack

GRANDVIEW – The key to the Grandview boys’ tennis squad picking up its second victory of the season last night may have been a freshman who’s transitioning to singles play.

The underclassman, Roger Escareno, pulled off a nailbiter Thursday. He edged Wapato’s Adrian Zavala in the No. 2 singles match.

The freshman Escareno got past Zavala fairly easily in the opening set, winning 6-3. Escareno was pushed to the brink in the second set, however, before rallying for a match-clinching, overtime 7-6(7-3) win.

Escareno, said GHS Coach Ronda Penwell, recently made the switch from doubles to singles play. Penwell said the freshman has shown great improvement, noting yesterday’s victory over Zavala was his first of the season.

With the host Greyhounds also getting wins in the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches, the Grandview boys’ squad defeated the Wolfpack, 3-2.

The victory for the GHS boys, coming in their final regular season match of the year, leaves the ‘Hounds with a CWAC record of 2-7, 2-12 overall.

In girls’ play yesterday, visiting Wapato prevailed by a 3-2 margin over Grandview. The Lady ‘Hounds picked up their two wins on the day in singles play, those coming from Taylor Hamm and Esmeralda Jacobo.

Grandview’s girls, it appeared, looked as though they might knock off Wapato, as Jozelle Prieto and Biviana Rivera took the opening set from their Wapato counterparts in No. 3 doubles play. Amanda Cantu and Katy Palma rallied down the stretch, though, besting Prieto and Rivera 6-4, 6-1 for the come-from-behind win.

The Grandview girls’ tennis squad closed out regular season play with a conference mark of 1-8, 2-12 overall.

The opening round of District tourney play, to be hosted by the West Valley Rams, is slated for next Thursday, May 22.
