KENNEWICK – Sunnyside’s tennis squads finished the season at the District playoffs this past weekend.
At Kamiakin High School, Sunnyside’s boys squad went 1-5, with only Alexis Osuna earning a victory against Venkatesh Varada of Hanford, 6-2, 6-4.
In round two, Osuna lost a hard-fought match against Gianni Landby of Southridge, 7-6 (10-8), 6-0. Osuna went on to the consolation round where he lost against Mitchel Way of Kennewick, 6-2, 5-7, 6-0.
Sunnyside’s Nathan Laverman lost his first round match against Cyrus Stephens of Hanford 6-1, 6-3. Zach Halma of Sunnyside also lost his singles match against Ethan Ling of Southridge 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles play, Sunnyside’s Michael Yan and Matthew Schaneman lost to a Kamiakin team 6-0, 6-3. Grizzlies Christian Murphy and Bryce Murphy lost to a Kennewick team 6-3, 6-2. Rissto Barboza and Cody Parke of Sunnyside lost to a Southridge team 6-1, 6-0.
The girls team played at Southridge High School and did not earn a win during the tournament.
In singles play, Sunnyside’s Kelsee Schaneman lost to Zoi Garcia of Kennewick 6-0, 6-1. Lady Grizzly Roxy Plancarte lost to Alani Safford of Southridge in twin 6-2 sets. Jazmine Lopez of Sunnyside lost 6-0, 6-1 to Kylee Tate of Kamiakin.
The Lady Grizzly doubles teams also had losses. Mattie Meyers and Sydnee Hernanadez of Sunnyside lost to a Kamiakin team 6-1, 6-2. Sunnyside’s Angelica Ceja and Jessica Garnica lost to a Southridge team 6-0, 6-1. Lady Grizzlies Mirella Ramirez and Stephanie Herrera lost to a Hanford team 6-1, 6-0.
“May I say that Sunnyside coaches are very proud of exemplary sportsmanship of our players and the tenacity with which they played,” said Sunnyside Coach David Downing. “They never gave up and they received compliments from other coaches and spectators.”
