SHS senior comes up short at District tourney

KENNEWICK – Had Sunnyside High School senior Ethan Partch been able to shave five strokes off his score yesterday, he’d be moving on to day-two action today at the 3A District golf tournament.

As it turned out, Partch missed the cut line by five strokes, and the only member of the SHS boys golf team to qualify for postseason play saw his prep career come to a close.

First day action at District took place at Kennewick’s Canyon Lakes Golf Course. The 20 golfers from the 30-golfer field who made the cut are playing today (Tuesday) at Richland’s Horn Rapids Golf Course.

Partch actually was on the verge of making the cutline, but two holes did him in Monday. He triple-bogeyed the opening hole on the back nine, a par-4, dogleg left; and absorbed a 9 on the closing 18th hole, an uphill, par-4.

In both instances, it was Partch’s short game – chipping and putting – that cost him on holes 10 and 18.

“Other than those two holes, Ethan actually was getting around the course in decent shape,” said SHS Coach Gary Rohde. “He put quite a few pars and bogeys together.”

Partch ended up shooting 51-50 on the two nines at Canyon Lakes.
