Gang reduction efforts approved

YAKIMA – ESD 105 was yesterday (Tuesday) awarded a $75,000 contract for the purpose of providing gang violence and youth substance abuse support to the cities of Sunnyside and Toppenish.

The support, training and technical assistance will be provided for the purpose of maintaining community coalitions dedicated to the reduction of gangs and substance abuse.

ESD 105, in keeping with the contract, will also mentor officials in Wapato and Union Gap in developing such community coalitions.

The contract also stipulates that ESD 105 will assist with the quarterly Yakima County Gang Commission meetings and the maintenance of its website.

The contract expires May 31, 2015 and was approved by county commissioners unanimously.
