GIRLS PREP VOLLEYBALL
YAKIMA – The Sunnyside volleyball team can finally celebrate a win.
The Lady Grizzlies last night defeated Davis 3-1.
“The ladies played a great match last night,” said Sunnyside Coach Jordyne Jaquish.
The three sets in which the Lady Grizzlies prevailed were tightly contested.
Sunnyside opened the match with a 25-22 victory in the first set. Building on the momentum, the Lady Grizzlies won the second set by an identical
Davis battled back in the third set to win 25-23, but Sunnyside didn’t allow itself any discouragement.
The Lady Grizzlies in the fourth and final set stepped up the intensity and battled to a 25-21 win.
“We have been working on making quick transitions on our defensive coverage, and our team did a great job of reading the attacks on the other side of the net,” said Jaquish.
She said the defense adjusted when necessary and the offense “…brought a lot of high-intensity fire power at the net.”
Liddy Valle had a team-high 14 kills and 27 digs for the Lady Grizzlies.
Teammate Tiana Perez got in another eight kills and denied the Pirates at the net with five blocks.
Maloree Kupp contributed to the net play with four kills. She provided 14 assists and had two aces.
Jaquish said the team also was aggressive from the serving line.
Libero Mikaela Chavez was 18-for-18 serving and collected two aces. She also was busy keeping the ball off the floor with 18 digs.
Teammate Leah Diddens was also 100 percent from the service line (14-for-14). As a result, she also had two aces. Diddens, at the net, contributed five kills and two blocks to the stats.
Madison Marro of Sunnyside also performed well, serving 17-of-18 and collecting two aces.
Helping the Lady Grizzlies with 11 assists was Jordan Rodriguez.
“Our court communication has made a huge improvement,” Jaquish said of the collective efforts of the Sunnyside volleyball players.
The Lady Grizzlies (1-6, 1-7) will tomorrow (Saturday) travel to Wenatchee for the Wenatchee Volleyball Invitational.
